4 Ways to Get a Website For Cheap

The most time-consuming yet completely free way to get a website for cheap is to do the website yourself… Years before I got into website design myself, I watched my sister create her own blog website using WordPress (when it was free). She was able to do it, but I watched her struggle for at least a month to figure out everything just to start what she really wanted to do.

Today, many more different tools have hit the market and have made website design a little easier. That is to say, there is no such thing as a completely free website builder anymore.

Introduction

Websites are extremely important for a business these days but, many times they can come at a hefty price. Most of the time they are upwards of $5,000 – $20,000 and sometimes more. Fortunately, during my time as a website designer, I have found how to get a website for cheap. By cheap, I mean less than $2,000. Whether you want something simple or complex, it’s possible to find a solution that fits your budget.

Here are some options you can look into.

Find a freelancer

If you’re looking for a website designer, but don’t have the budget to hire one full-time, you can look into hiring a freelancer. Freelancers are people who work on a project-by-project basis and charge by the hour or by the project.

You can find them through websites like Upwork or Fiverr–they’ll likely be listed under “graphic design” or “web development.” Many times, you will not see these people advertising a lot online as they use those platforms as their way for clients to find them.

Freelance website designers are also found by asking around. As a website designer myself, I know for a fact that designers get most of their clients through word of mouth.

Do it yourself with a website builder

Some of the better drag-and-drop website builders, that require absolutely NO CODING are:

Showit (My favorite)

Squarespace

Webflow (formerly Wix)

These are all very similar but may have tools that may work better for you than others. All of these Website Builder tools have Free Trials as well. You can check out my Comprehensive Guide to DIYing a Website on a Budget for actionable tips and crucial elements you need on your website!

Get a Website for Cheap Using a Website Template

If you are thinking about making a DIY website, and are semi-tech savvy, using a website template may be an even better option for you. These are premade website designs used as a starting point to plug in your branding colors, images, and logo. They make having a beautiful website incredibly easy and can save a lot of time and money for beginners.

Website templates generally start at around $250 and can go upwards of $900 depending on how big you need it to be.

This is a client of mine who worked on a template customization service with me.

You can find a couple of live examples in our shop here: Temp Haven

If you end up needing a little bit more help, most website designers that have a template shop will offer template customizations for slightly more.

Find an agency that is offering beta website design services

Getting a website for cheap from an agency can seem impossible, but I have a secret most people don’t know about. Finding an agency that is doing Beta Services is the absolute best method. There are a few reasons why designers may be offering beta website design services. One of the most common reasons is that they’re trying to hone down their system. This means you might be asked for feedback or deal with some bumps in the road as it is testing their system.

For example, I have just a Website-In-a-Day offer. We are currently working on creating an efficient system but will need beta testers in a month or so. For our beta customers, we offer a fully custom 5+ page website for $1,800 rather than the full $3,000 that will be charged after the full launch.

Many website designers will do this. You can find them throughout social media by looking up topics such as #websitedesigner or #websitedesignerlife.

Just because a designer is offering a beta service does not mean they are inexperienced. This is why you need to do your research on the company to see if you will be a good fit. It is simply a way to test the service and gain client testimonials before launching the full offer.
